A Different Perspective on Success

What is life really all about? Is it wealth? Social status? Power? Relationships?… Pursuit of Happiness? We don’t know, but these things seem to dictate our direction in life anyway. They are indicators of “success”. Maybe… But it just sounds desperately fucking boring! There’s got to be more to life than being this guy, right?

That’s not to say that focusing on these areas is worthless. Au contraire! A passionate career contributes to self-worth and wealth, which may lead to opportunities of all sorts and makes existence more exciting in return. The finality of life is death. It’s quite absurd, and it’s certainly not helping us to figure out what we are supposed to do during our stay on mother earth. We are clueless. But there are a few empirical observations that could help us. We are certain that :

1. Having fun, playing, experiencing joy, pleasure, being stoked, etc, feels good.

2. Pain, tribulations, boredom, and regrets don’t.

We all know this. Yet, for some reason, way too many people end up bored to death, hurt, and regretful. And despite having it all! What’s the point of being so-called “successful” if you are not enjoying yourself?

If success exists, this is what it should look like; a massive smile on your face and a mind devoid of regrets. Because in the end, that’s all we’ll have left.

Through its many forms, fun creates the finest memories. What do you think you will remember the most? Your first backflip on skis during a spring weekend in the French Alps with your best friends cheering you up? Or that work meeting, Monday of week 23? See… Beyond wonderful memories, having fun allows you to explore life and its magic. It’s the driving force behind all adventures, discoveries, or simple moments of joy. It makes us feel alive. And what is a greater state of being than feeling alive? Perhaps that is what our purpose is. Be alive and feel alive. More fun, less pain.

And you know what’s beautiful? Having fun will increase your chance of being successful in other areas of your life. If you are having fun at work, the chances are that you will spend more time working, you will be more focused, you’ll want to improve your skills and as a result, be better at what you do and earn more. The same goes for relationships and the way we approach life every day.
